Day 01: Arrival
First you need to arrive at the nearest town from the basecamp of Grahan Village, that is Kasol. There are many public and private buses available from Delhi that take around 10 hours to reach Kasol. From Kasol you need to cover a distance of 8 km on foot to reach the basecamp. Approximately it takes 4 to 5 hours to hike up to the village of Grahan which is at an altitude of 7700 ft. The terrain is rocky and takes you up towards the hill from a gradual ascent. You will come across the rhododendron trees and river streams on your way up. After reaching the Grahan village, trekkers can pitch a tent and enjoy the views from their campsite.
Day 02: Grahan to Mung Thach
On the second day; Set out to cover a distance of 7 km from Grahan village to Mung Thach at an elevation of 11150 ft. As you navigate through some steep climb and reach the clearings; you will come across fluffy sheeps grazing in the pasture land and few villagers in their humble houses. The steep sections mostly consist of forests which eventually give way to the meadows and the view of Mung Thach where you can retire for the day.
Day 03: Mung Thach to Nagaru
The third day gets tedious with steep ascent and the altitude gain to the highest campsite of Sar Pass at an altitude of 12470 ft. You will notice the trail going through snowy fields and the mountain peaks crowned with snow. The 8 km of the trail can be covered in 6 hours on an average. Make sure you have enough layering for the chilly wind of the valley at high altitude. Although, all the hustle is worth the view of the Parvati valley surrounded by snow-peak mountains with high ridges.
Day 04: Nagaru to Sar Pass
Fourth day is long, covering the distance from Nagaru to Sar Pass and then descending back to Biskeri Thatch for making the camp. For a comfortable journey start early in the morning and climb through steep snow trails to reach the ridge. Which gives you a stunning view of the Tosh valley and top of Sar Pass. The majestic mountains of the Parvati valley line up to give you a beautiful view among the snow covered forest and fields. Spend your time at the top till your heart’s content. And then set out for descending back towards your campsite at Biskeri Thatch passing through Rhodo trees. The total distance covered on the fourth day is around 14 km.
Day 05: Departure
Fifth day marks the departure day as you make your way from Biskari Thach to the village of Barshaini with a distance of 8 km. The descent makes the trail easier to navigate which takes you through a river in the Parvati valley and the forest of Pine and Oak trees. After you reach Barshaini, drive back to Kasol and plan accordingly for your onward journey to your hometown.
When to Visit
The best time to visit Sar Pass trek is in between the months of May to October. The temperature remains pleasant during these months. And you can even see snow covered peaks with snow fields at the higher altitude making it a memorable trip.
